Discover the DanceMode Immersions

Join us on a journey through the rich connections between our bodies, rhythm, music, movement, culture, community, and dancing!

DanceMode Immersions go beyond traditional dance workshops—they are transformative experiences designed to help you unlock your natural rhythm, refine your skills, and immerse yourself in a supportive community of movement enthusiasts.

For over two decades, DanceMode has been creating immersive learning experiences for movers, dancers, and teachers of all levels. Since 2012, we’ve been proud to bring these unique retreats to Berlin, welcoming participants from around the world. Our programs have shaped and inspired countless dancers, including teachers and performers from the local Blues, Balboa, and Lindy Hop scenes, many of whom return to our immersions year after year.

Fusion has been part of our curriculum from the start, and since 2022, we’ve introduced dedicated Fusion tracks to cater to the growing interest in this expressive style. Whether you’re a beginner discovering dance for the first time, an experienced dancer looking to deepen your craft, or even a teacher seeking fresh perspectives, DanceMode Immersions are for you.

Since 2001 I’ve been organizing retreats, festivals, trainings, and community gatherings throughout the world—from Portland and the Pacific Northwest to Europe since 2007, and in Berlin since 2012. I continue to be deeply grateful to every host, organizer, musician, sound professional, teaching partner, DJ, and participant who has walked this journey with me. These experiences have shaped my life, and they continue to be my passion and joy.

Going Forward

As we move forward, DanceMode is growing in the most meaningful way: through people.
Many of the practitioners on our team began years ago as participants. They later discovered modalities they are passionate about, pursued training, and eventually became part of our teaching team. That evolution is the heart of DanceMode—learning, transforming, becoming, and then supporting others on their path.

DanceMode is not just an event. It’s a way of being.
A space to explore what life might feel like when we follow our values, passions, neurodivergent inner compass, and our most honest selves.

We invite you to:

  • shed the masks you’ve learned to wear
  • stop hiding
  • let yourself be seen
  • move toward your own becoming

You don’t have to perform or impress. You don’t have to be social every moment. You can curl up in a corner and rest, cry, heal, emerge, and begin again. You can feel inspired, overwhelmed, connected, curious, or unsure. All of you is welcome here.

You are your body. You don’t exist outside of it in this lifetime.

So the question becomes: How do you want to go forward living inside this body? What does your body need in order to thrive, to create, to express, to live the life you imagine?

Neurodivergence, Autistic Leadership & Space-Making

DanceMode is an autistic-run, neurodivergent-aware community. We work deliberately to soften traditional power structures, which often create harm without even intending to. We challenge assumptions about who you are, how you “should” behave, or why you think or feel the way you do.

Here, we don’t expect sameness. We don’t ask you to mask or conform. We don’t evaluate you based on social norms you never agreed to. Of course, every community develops routines and shared language, but we do our best to keep curiosity alive—staying open to new ideas, challenges, differences in communication, unexpected emotions, and ways of processing the world.

What makes DanceMode Immersions unique?

Personal guidance
You can spend long hours learning, but if you're working in a group of several dozen, you're often left to your own devices because there's only one teacher who can't dedicate much attention to everyone. Our teacher-to-student ratio is 1 to 2 or 1 to 4. This close-to-personal guidance is a unique approach at dance retreats. This way you learn more and progress faster than in other dance classes.

Unravel your native dancer
Some people are lucky enough to grow up dancing. Others learn it later in life, often thinking that dancing is about steps, patterns, or frames. For us, dancing is breathing and moving in response to vibration and sound. Learning these fundamentals is key to unravelling the natural dancer within. We are here to help you do this through a specially designed program where each element is set and planned to synergistically build your progress.

Come as you are
Workshops are often targeted at dancers of specific skill levels. This is partly because it’s easier to convey knowledge to large groups that way. DanceMode Immersions work differently. They are very intimate, allowing each participant to be guided almost individually. This event is tailored to your needs and abilities. We gather at the beginning of the retreat, work with each participant, and create a unique schedule that will improve your skills regardless of your dance level. Many dance teachers and beginners alike have participated in our immersions. We welcome you regardless of your level of dance experience.

Connection Through Curiosity

Connection at DanceMode is built through open curiosity rather than social expectation. We try to meet you exactly where you are—emotionally, physically, neurologically—while sharing who we are in return. In this exchange, we find authentic connection rooted in genuine interest rather than surface performance.

Every Person Matters

We believe deeply in the value of each human being. No one should be dismissed, discarded, or minimized. No voice or identity is more important than another. It’s easy to connect with someone who shares your interests. The deeper work (and deeper intimacy) comes when we don’t fully understand each other. When we hold each other with spaciousness rather than judgment, we begin to create a culture that honors difference instead of fearing it.

At DanceMode, we practice equanimity, egalitarian care, and love that makes room for complexity. When assumptions fall away, authenticity rises. And from authenticity, real belonging becomes possible.

Dance, Culture & Respect

At DanceMode, we practice and share movement, dance, music, and ideas from many cultures—including cultures that are not native to us. These art forms come from lineages of lived experience, ancestry, history, and often from people who have endured oppression, displacement, and cultural erasure. We deeply value and honor the cultures, peoples, and histories that shaped these practices long before we encountered them.

When we engage with or borrow from artistic or ritual traditions, we do so out of genuine respect, curiosity, and passion for the healing, social, spiritual, and expressive elements they carry. We strive to learn from original sources whenever possible, and we invite native carriers, teachers, tradition keepers, and local communities to share their knowledge when available. We practice with intention—acknowledging the cultural roots, honoring the lineage, and creating space for these forms to continue evolving with dignity rather than extraction.

These practices enrich our lives, support our bodies, expand our cultural understanding, and give us pathways into shared community and human connection.

Living in Motion Across Lineages

DanceMode is about Living in Motion. We draw from:

  • multiple Qi Gong and Daoist movement traditions
  • martial arts lineages
  • trauma-informed somatic work
  • historical and contemporary dance forms
  • movement education modalities
  • breathwork and meditation practices
  • cultural music traditions
  • mind–body awareness schools
  • health and wellness approaches from across the world

Each modality is offered with respect for its origins, and with gratitude for the people who preserved and transmitted such knowledge through generations.

A Practice of Curiosity

Everything we encounter here will naturally interact with our own upbringing, culture, nervous system, identity, and lived experience. You are invited to explore these practices with curiosity—try them on, feel what resonates, adapt what works, and leave aside what doesn’t. Nothing here is mandatory; everything is offered. You bring your history and your body, and you take with you whatever becomes meaningful or supportive on your path.

DanceMode simply offers the space, and the invitation. You choose your way through it.

DanceMode Training Intensive

The DanceMode Training Intensive is a small-group retreat designed for dancers who want depth—in movement, in awareness, and in artistic expression. Over 6 nights and 5 full days, we train long and rest deeply, blending mind-body practices with partner dance, improvisation, and creative exploration.

No two Intensives are ever the same.

Each retreat is crafted specifically for the people who attend. Through observation, feedback, and daily staff meetings, the teaching team continually adapts the program to support each participant’s individual path.

Depending on the group, past retreats have leaned into:
• Body restructuring and functional alignment
• Qi Gong, breathwork, and energy cultivation
• Fusion Dancing influences and aesthetics
• Blues elements and creative texture
• Tango technique and partner dynamics
• Latin, Swing, African, Embodied Rhythm, and more…
• Masculine / feminine embodiment
• Sacred sensuality or intimacy skills
• Outdoor experiential practice
• Break-out sessions for small-group focus

This is training for dancers who want to go deep — dancers who want to understand the “how,” the “why,” and the wide range of what’s possible in their bodies and partnerships.

The work will challenge experienced dancers while remaining accessible for committed, less-experienced dancers. Sessions welcome conversation, questions, experimentation, and cross-disciplinary exploration.

You will develop:

  • Heightened body awareness
  •  Refined physical mechanics for movement efficiency and injury prevention
  •  Energy balancing for sustainable dance and wellness
  •  Tools for deepening connection, musicality, and creative choices in Fusion, Blues, and other requested partner dances

We’d love to have you there!

What is the program like?

The DanceMode Immersions program spans six days and is carefully designed to provide a comprehensive and structured approach to movement and dance. Here's how the schedule is organized:

Day 1: Orientation and planning

The retreat begins with an extensive evening session where participants introduce themselves, share their goals, and discuss their expectations for the week. This meeting allows us to understand your needs and customize the schedule accordingly, ensuring that the program supports your progress effectively.

Days 2-6: Immersion in movement practice

The next five days are dedicated to intensive learning and practice, with 7-9 hours of sessions each day.

Below is a breakdown of a typical day:

  • Morning Qigong Session (Optional)
Start the day with Qigong, an ancient Chinese movement practice focused on energy flow and promoting health. Led by Brenda, a certified instructor, this session helps you prepare your bodies and minds for the day ahead in a gentle and energizing way.

  • Dynamic warm-up
After a brief break, the day continues with a general warm-up session that incorporates elements of classical gymnastics, yoga, and fascial work. The goal is to awaken and prepare your body for the physical demands of the day.

  • Breakfast Break
A break to refuel and relax before the more intensive sessions.

  • In-depth movement study
This longer session focuses on body mechanics and understanding how movement works from the inside out.
  • Topics include:
  • Anatomy in motion:Learn about the structures and functions of the body to improve movement efficiency.
  • Elements of the Franklin Method: Explore techniques using Dynamic Neuro-cognitive Imagery, anatomical embodiment, and mindful movement to improve alignment, proprioception, and movement quality.

  • Lunch break
A midday pause for relaxation and nourishment. You can use this time to have a meal, rest or even a short nap!

  • Dance technique and refinement
The in-depth afternoon session focuses on dance-specific techniques tailored to the participants' needs and goals. This includes refining foundational skills, exploring advanced techniques, and integrating the principles of body mechanics into dance.

During Blues Immersion, you practice with live music from Dan Nash; it’s like having a personal mini-concert each

          day!

  • Evening practice
Optional evening sessions or social dancing provide time for additional practice, often in a relaxed and collaborative environment. For those who wish, Berlin’s vibrant dance scene offers opportunities to attend local events and social dances. Also, at least once during the week, we hold a Spa night to take care of our bodies, and a private party in the nearby pub on another night.

  • Structure and Flexibility

While the program follows a structured daily schedule, there is room for adjustments based on group energy and

individual needs. This approach ensures that you receive the support and space you need to fully engage with

           the learning process.
